PHILADELPHIA, Pa. - Villanova junior defenseman John LoCascio has been named the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Lacrosse Performer of the Year. LoCascio is one of 12 student-athletes selected to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Lacrosse Team. The team is voted on by the sports information offices of the 28 area institutions from the Philadelphia metropolitan area.
In order to be eligible for Academic All-Area honors, an athlete must be in at least his second year at the institution and hold a cumulative grade point average of 3.20 or better.
LoCascio was named a Third Team All-America selection to cap an outstanding junior season for the defenseman who collected 85 ground balls and caused 53 turnovers in 2013. He was named the 2013 BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year, was an unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST First Team and also earned a spot on the 2013 BIG EAST Championship All-Tournament Team. The junior ranked first in the NCAA averaging 3.79 caused turnovers per game and also registered two goals and six assists for eight points as a dominate force in the Villanova backfield. Through his three seasons as a Wildcat, LoCascio has collected 164 ground balls and caused 87 career turnovers and currently ranks 2nd all-time at Villanova averaging 1.93 caused turnovers per game. Additionally, the defenseman ranked 3rd in the BIG EAST averaging 6.07 ground balls per game in 2013. LoCascio will return for his final season as a Wildcat for the 2013-14 academic year and will once again serve as a team captain for his senior campaign.
Off the field, LoCascio is a two-time Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team member. The Fairfield, N.J., native has a 3.66 cumulative grade point average as a finance major. He is a three-time BIG EAST All-Academic Team member and a candidate for 2013 CoSIDA Academic All-America honors.
LoCascio is joined on the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Men's Lacrosse team by University of Pennsylvania teammates Isaac Bock, Brian Feeney and Anthony Santomo; Aaron Benz of Eastern; Widener's Charlie Bytheway; Robert Church from Drexel; Scott Chanelli of Haverford; Swarthmore teammates Jonathan Molloy and Steve Selverian; and Cabrini teammates Corey Elmer and Bobby Thorp.
