Senior defenseman Danny Sweeney was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week while freshman Connor Kirst earned BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. Joining them on the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll is Christian Cuccinello. All three played a pivotal role during the Wildcats 15-7 victory over Providence on Saturday to clinch the No. 2 spot in the conference tournament.
Villanova defender Danny Sweeney had five ground balls and a caused turnover during Villanova’s 15-7 win over Providence to secure the No. 2 seed in the BIG EAST Tournament. Sweeney ranks 10th all-time in program history in career caused turnovers.
Kirst had a career high three goals and added an assist during Villanova’s 15-7 victory at Providence. The freshman also went 5-for-10 from the X and had a team best six ground balls. Kirst found the back of the net on every shot he took, going 3-for-3 on the day.
Cuccinello had a team-best seven points during Villanova’s 15-7 victory over Providence. Cuccinello had a hat trick and four assists on Saturday.
Villanova will play in the BIG EAST semi-finals this Thursday, May 4th at 7 P.M. against Providence. The Friars, who are the host of the 2017 Tournament, are 9-6 on the season. The game can be seen on CBS Sports Network.
