Villanova Wildcats
versus
Pennsylvania Quakers

Wednesday * April 25, 2001
Villanova Stadium * 7:00 p.m.

Scouting Pennsylvania: Penn enters tonight's game with the Wildcats ranked 19th in the nation with a 6-5 overall record. The Quakers lost their last decision, 18-6 to #2 Syracuse at Syracuse. Penn is paced by senior Kevin Cadin, who leads a balanced attack and midfield. Cadin currently leads the team in goals (19), assists (11), points (29), and is second in groundballs with (39). He is joined in double figures in goals by five other players, including Scott Solow with 16 tallies. In goal, sophomore Ryan Kelly has been the primary keeper, recording a 9.63 goals against average and .566 save percentage. The Quakers are vulnerable on the man-down. They have allowed 18 man-down goals on the season, stopping opponents only 65 percent of the time. Penn does not shot the abll that well, connecting on only 25.7 percent of their shots. Penn does manage to take alot of shots and in turn score a lot of goals. The Quakers are averaging 40.3 shots per game and 10.4 goals per contest.

One Less Equals Success: The last ten times Villanova has committed a penalty and their defense has been forced to play in a man-down situation they have prospered, not allowing a single goal. For the season, Villanova has been phenomenal on the man-down, allowing only nine goals in 49 man-down situations. Their 81.6 percent success rate at stopping the opponents has the man-down defense ranked 5th nationally. Part of the reason they are so good has a direct correlation to last season. The 2000 Villanova man-up finished the season ranked as the nation's most prolific scoring unit. The 2000 `Cats scored 31 times in 60 attempts for a 51.7 percent success rate. The 2001 extra man unit is no slouch either, ranking 20th in the NCAA with a 32.4 success rate. The `Cats have scored 23 goals in 71 chances.

Century Mark: On Saturday, April 7, Villanova senior attackman Andrew Bogle tallied three goals and an assist against Fairfield. With his first goal in the game, Bogle tallied his 100th career point at Villanova with 59 goals and 41 assists. In his career, Bogle has 66 goals and 41 assists for 107 points. He has started every game in his four year career on the Main Line and will graduate with a degree in Marketing.

What a Difference a Quarter Makes: The first quarter has been Villanova's worst all season and if they get out of the first with a lead there is a good chance they will earn the victory. In the first quarter Villanova has been outscored by their opponents 26-22. What a difference a quarter makes, because in the second, third, and fourth quarters Villanova has pummeled their opponents. The Wildcats have outscored their opponents in the second quarter 25-20, third quarter 29-26, and fourth quarter 32-27.

Making His Mark Nationally: If there has been one constant through the 2001 Villanova lacrosse season it has been the play of sophomore attackman Brian Marks. Marks currently has scored 20 goals and tallied 24 assists for 44 points. All three marks lead the team in their respective categories. Marks has also been making his presence felt nationally. The sophomore is currently tied for 13th nationlly in points per game with 4.00 and ranked 10th nationally in assists per game with 2.18.

Denver Game Rescheduled: After discussions all day April 11th and more discussions on April 12th, Villanova head coach Randy Marks and Denver head coach Jaime Munro, rescheduled the Villanova-Denver game to be played on May 4th at 7:30 p.m. Instead of the game taking place at Denver, the game has been moved to Villanova Stadium, since Denver will be in the area to play Fairfield on May 5th.

Face-Off Mecca: In 2001, the Villanova Wildcat men's lacrosse team welcomed a new face to their sidelines. A 1994 graduate of Drexel, Keith Mecca joined the Wildcats as a volunteer coach in 2001. One of his main responsibilites has been to work with the Wildcats face-off men. His efforts in 2001 have seen the Wildcats make great strides in improvement. The 2001 Villanova squad is winning 50.6 percent of their face-offs in comparison to the 2000 squad which won 49 percent. At one point in the season, Mecca had the `Cats ranked 12th in the nation with 55.8 face-off win percentage. Mecca has helped to drastically improve the play of face-off man Frank Falanga. In 2000, Falanga won only 40.4 percent of his face-offs in contrast to 2001 which he has currently won 51.6 percent of his efforts.

2001 Quaker Lax At a Glance: Penn finished at .500 in Ivy League play for only the second time in program history and first since 1997, Head Coach Marc Van Arsdale's first season at the helm of the Quakers. The three Ancient Eight victories was an improvement of two from last season. The Quakers sixth win of the season (against St. Joe's on April 17) gave them a season-high three-game win streak, their best since winning three-straight during the 1999 campaign (March 16-23 over St. Joe's, Yale and Lafayette). Penn's six victories also surpasses last season's total and matched their 1999 performance. This is the third time in his five seasons at Penn that Head Coach Marc Van Arsdale has guided the Quakers to six wins in a season. Todd Minerley moved past Richard Bennett (1967-69) into sixth place all-time in assists for the Quakers in the win over St. Joe's. Minerley set up two Cadin goals, giving him 67 on his career. Nineteen different players recorded points for the Quakers, while nine of them recorded their first points of the season in the win over St. Joe's. Seventeen different Quakers scored goals as the Red and Blue fell one tally short of the program record 26 (against Drexel in 1994), with a 25-6 thrashing of visiting St. Joseph's in Penn's season finale at Franklin Field.
