Wildcats Get Ready for Home Stretch

April 21, 1999

Following one of the biggest victories in Villanova men's lacrosse history, the Wildcats don't have much time to celebrate because the Cats will face No. 6 Georgetown on Sunday, April 25.

"This was a great win, but most of all I am happy for our kids, they have worked extremely hard. They deserve this victory," said head coach Randy Marks. "Now we have to turn our focus to one of the best teams in the country, that is playing their best lacrosse of the year right now!"

In the victory on Wednesday, John McTigue continued his rampage as he recorded a career-high six points in the 7-5 win. Tom Hourican added three goals for the Wildcats, while Matt Wilk had eight saves in goal. Not only did the win mark the first victory for Nova over the Quakers, but it was also the first time Villanova has sweep the city of Philadelphia in the same season. Nova defeated Drexel 9-8 back on March 28 and then sent St. Joseph's back to City Line Avenue with a 21-11 loss on April 17, to give the Cats a perfect 3-0 record versus the City.

McTigue, a junior from Bethpage, N.Y. has scored 18 points in his last three games, and is currently sixth in the country with a 2.33 assist per game average. He has also scored in all but one contest this spring, the lone shutout came against the Cat's 13-7 victory over Sacred Heart.

"John has been our most consistent performer this season. He is having a terrific season and has been a major contributor," said coach Marks. "We will look for him to carry us through the rest of this season and in to 2000."

The Wildcats (7-5) will take on the Georgetown Hoyas on Sunday, as Nova looks to avenge last season's 19-2 loss. Prior to game on Sunday, there will be an alumni game between the two schools, in which approximately 40 former players are scheduled to participate. Also, Villanova will honor their seven seniors for their dedication and hard work.
