RICHMOND, Va. - Junior midfielder Matt Starker (Summit, N.J.) and freshman attack Tim Atkins (West Chester, Pa./Malvern Prep) have each been honored with weekly awards by the Colonial Athletic Association, the team learned yesterday. Starker joined Bobby Griebe of Towson as Co-Players of the Week, while Atkins was named the league's Rookie of the Week.
Starker scored four goals and had one assist in an 11-5 conference win over 11th-ranked Hofstra on Friday night. Playing on the road, Starker scored three goals during a run of seven straight by the Wildcats that put the game out of reach of Hofstra. Starker also had two assists in an 11-7 loss to ninth-ranked Notre Dame at home last Monday.
For the season, Starker leads the team in goals scored (16) and points (23). He is also tied with teammate Brendan O'Donnell for the team lead with seven assists. Starker has registered at least one point in all nine games this season, including four games with multiple goals scored. He also scored four goals in the season opener against Colgate.
Atkins scored two goals and had an assist in the 11-7 loss to Notre Dame. The assist was the first of his collegiate career, and he notched the first two-goal outing of his career as well. Atkins produced three of his four points on the season in the game, as he had previously scored his first goal of the season in a 10-7 win over Penn on March 5.
Both players earned weekly awards for the first time this season. Earlier in the 2005 campaign, junior goalie Joe Canuso (Moorestown, N.J.) had been named the conference Player of the Week on March 1. Atkins is the first Villanova player to be Rookie of the Week this season.
The Wildcats have a 6-3 overall record and are 2-0 in conference play this season. They play their next two games at home against league foes, beginning on Saturday night with a 7 p.m. contest against Towson.
