Villanova Wildcats versus Dartmouth Big Green
Saturday * March 22, 2001 Villanova Stadium * 1:00 p.m. Scouting Dartmouth: Dartmouth enters today's game with Villanova after coming off a disapointing 14-10 defeat at the hands of Ohio State. The Big Green entered the showdown with the Buckeyes with a 2-1 mark after defeating Colgate and Albany. Their lone loss prior to the Ohio State game came against #17 Towson, 7-6, in overtime. Now standing at 2-2, the Big Green feature a potent offense and solid defensive core. Their first attack line and first midfield have tallied 32 of their 36 goals. On defense they feature an impressive goalkeeper in sophomore Mike Gault. Gault currently touts a 6.94 goals against average and .640 save percentage. Gault has played all but six and a half minutes in between the pipes for the Big Green. Off the bench, Dartmouth will look to Connor Price. Price was extremely effective against Ohio State netting two goals. For the season, Price has tallied the team's remaining four goals. The Big Green are producing goals on the extra man advantage at a 29 percent clip. They have been extremely effective on clears, clearing the ball 87 percent of the time. Last Time Out: Driven by tough losses in their previous three games, the Villanova Wildcat men's lacrosse team came out confident and prepared to play a complete team game. Their efforts paid off as they rolled past Lehigh easily 10-2. In the victory, Villanova received superb goaltending from senior All-America candidate Matt Wilk. The Bound Brook, NJ native was phenomenal allowing only two goals while recording ten shots for a .833 save percentage. Offensively for Villanova, they were led by the Marks Brothers, Brian and Justin, who dominated the game. The duo combined for six of Villanova's ten goals and seven of their 17 points. Each brother tallied three goals, while Brian also recorded an assist. Also tallying for Villanova were Randall Calvert and Richie Kratz, each player netted two goals. Tough Marks: Villanova men's lacrosse head coach Randy Marks has been apart of the Wildcats lacrosse program for 19 years. Over those 19 years, Marks has seen three of his son's play for his team. His first son David played for the Wildcats for two years before transferring to Johns Hopkins. Currently his middle and youngest sons play on his first attack line. Together the two brothers are prospering. Combined they have accounted for 28 of Villanova's 69 points, including 19 of their 42 goals. Justin Marks has 11 goals and one assist on the season, while Brian has eight goals and eight assists. Getting Offensive: Until the Lehigh game, Villanova midfielder Randall Calvert had gone 28 straight shots and four games without tallying a goal. The Ellicott City, MD native had a excellent spring that vaulted him into the starting lineup in his junior campaign. Unfortunately, the star had been unable to connect early in 2001. In hopes of jump starting his star's offensive talent, head coach Randy Marks moved Calvert back to the second midfield line. His efforts paid off as Calvert exploded for two beautiful goals on five shots. For the season, Calvert has tallied two goals and one assist. Sophomore Success: Last year, Villanova's sophomore class entered the Main Line school with high aspirations of academic and athletic success. Athletically in 2000, only two members of the Class of 2003 were consistent contributors on the field. In 2001 that number has increased three times to six. The two major contributors from 2000, attackman Brian Marks and long stick midfielder Owen Corso have been spectacular in their second seasons. Marks has eight goals and eight assists, to lead the team in points, while Corso leads the team in groundballs with 22. Joining Marks and Corso on the field in 2001 are Frank Falanga, the team's leading face-off man, Andrew Galano, a defensive starter who has collected nine groundballs, Eddie Deegan, the team's first defensive player off the bench, and Mike O'Donnell, a strong defensive midfielder that has made his presence felt physically as well as by recording five groundballs. In only their second season, their careers have just begun at Villanova, making the future bright for the Wildcat men's lacrosse team especially with the burgeoning talent of two more of their classmates, Conrad Wiedemann and Oscar James. Holloway's Helpers: Entering his junior season, Michael Holloway had tallied four goals and seven assists for 11 points in his career. Five games into his third season at Villanova, Holloway has recorded career marks for goals, assists, and points in a season. The Malvern, PA native has tallied three goals and 10 assists to date for 13 points. His previous single season highs were three goals and five assists for eight points. Holloway earned a spot on the first midfield after experiencing an excellent fall season. The midfielder posseses good speed and superb field vision. Melting Pot: This year's starting squad for Villanova is comprised of members of all four classes. Highlighting the starting squad are senior captains and All-America candidates Matt Wilk and Andrew Bogle. Wilk has been solid all season recording a 7.84 goals against average and .630 save percentage. In 2000, his .621 save percentage ranked him seventh in the nation. Bogle has tallied 53 goals and 38 assists in his four year career. This season, the Wilton High School product netted six goals and handed out four assists. The two are joined in the starting lineup by fellow co-captain Brian O'Hagan.
