Wildcats Travel to Marquette for First-Ever Meeting Saturday

VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova (1-5) returns to action on Saturday afternoon when the Wildcats travel to Milwaukee, Wis. to face Marquette (2-5) for their first BIG EAST game of the season. Game time is slated for 2 p.m. ET at Uihlein Park and will mark the first conference game for both teams this season as well as the first home game for Marquette this year. The two squads have never met as it marks just the second year of NCAA competition for the Golden Eagles and their first under the umbrella of the BIG EAST Conference.

Villanova This Season: The Wildcats enter Saturday's contest with a 1-5 record after falling to No. 13 Princeton on Tuesday night. The Wildcats got on the board first but weren't able to overcome Princeton's 9-2 run in the first half as Villanova fell to the 13th ranked Tigers 14-6.

As of the latest USILA Coaches poll released on Monday, March 17th, Villanova has scheduled eight ranked opponents on their calendar this season: No. 1 Maryland, No. 5 Denver, No. 9 Johns Hopkins, No. 12 Penn State, No. 13 Princeton, No. 14 Penn, No. 17 Lehigh and No. 20 Drexel.

`Nova Offense: Senior Kevin O'Neil (Cockeysville, Md.) leads the team with 15 points via 11 goals and four assists while Austin Frederick (Baltimore, Md.) follows closely behind with 10 points via five goals and five assists. 16 Wildcats have posted points through six games this season. Senior face-off specialist Thomas Croonquist (North Caldwell, N.J.) has posted a .512 win percentage this season, taking 65-of-127 attempts.

'Nova Defense: Freshman goalkeeper Dan Willis (Moorestown, N.J.) has earned the starting role for Villanova and posts an 10.29 GAA while making 51 saves to start the season. His save percentage currently stands at .464. Junior Reed Carlson (Arnold, Md.) has also seen significant action in net and claims a 13.10 goals against average and a .500 save percentage. The starting trio at close defense, junior Christian Kolderup (Darien, Conn.) and seniors Chris Conroy (Chatham, N.J.) and Chris Piccirilli (Davidsonville, Md.) have combined for 37 ground balls and 25 caused turnovers while senior John LoCascio (Fairfield, N.J.) posts 32 ground balls and team-high 15 caused turnovers.

 

 

A Look at Marquette: Marquette claims a 2-5 overall record following their weekend matchup against Detroit. They've posted wins over Hofstra (W, 11-9) and Detroit (W, 15-10). Losses on the year have come via Ohio State (L, 11-7), Marist (L, 16-12), Jacksonville (L, 9-8) and Duke (L, 15-10).

Golden Eagle Offense: Marquette averages 9.71goals per game on offense and surrenders 12.57 goals per game defensively. Tyler Melnyk (20g, 8a) leads the team with 28 points this season while Bryan Badolato (12g, 4a) follows behind with 16 points. 17 different players have posted points for the Golden Eagles this season.

Golden Eagle Defense: JJ Sagl, Jimmy Danaher and Matt Barone have split time in net and have combined to play over 420 minutes in goal while making 37 saves. Their goals against average currently stands at 12.57 while their save percentage is .296.
