PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Villanova senior Kevin Cunningham (Garden City, N.Y.) has been named the BIG EAST Offensive Player of the week, while fellow classmate Dan Gutierrez (Chevy Chase, Md.) has been named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll as announced by the conference office Monday afternoon.
Notre Dame's John Kemp earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week accolades for the first week of conference awards.
Cunningham earns Offensive Player of the Week honors after leading the Wildcats in a 17-7 routing of Lehigh, pacing Villanova with a seven point performance via five goals and two assists. Gutierrez led the defensive effort in the 17-7 victory, posting a career-high 12 saves while facing 40 shots. The netminder aided a Villanova defense that kept the Mountain Hawks scoreless for 36:17 that also shutout Lehigh in the third quarter.
The Wildcats also jumped one spot in both the USILA Coaches and Nike/Inside Lacrosse Media Polls to No. 9 nationally after being ranked 10th in the preseason polls prior to the start of the season.
Villanova will host Bucknell this Saturday, February 25th for their home opener in Villanova Stadium. Game time is slated for Noon.
