PHILDADELPHIA, Pa. - Senior attackman Nick Doherty (Bernardsville, N.J.) was selected as the 58th overall pick by the Hamilton Nationals in the 2013 Major League Lacrosse Collegiate Draft, held on Friday evening at the U.S. Lacrosse Convention in Philadelphia, Pa.
Doherty was selected during the eighth round and will will be able to sign a contract with Major League Lacrosse after the 2013 college season. Overall, 64 college seniors were selected over eight rounds.
Doherty has appeared in 38 games during his career at Villanova while making 23 starts and has proved to be a vital member of the Wildcats offense. After switching to a defensive midfielder during his junior season, Doherty will return to attack for his final year on the Main Line. Additionally, the senior has tallied 26 goals, 17 assists and 43 points through his junior campaign while picking up 39 ground balls and causing five turnovers.
Doherty will have the opportunity to join 2012 Villanova graduate Kevin Cunningham, who is currently rostered with the Nationals after going as the second overall pick in the 2012 MLL Supplemental Draft held earlier in December. The Nationals finished the 2012 MLL season with a 4-10 overall record with a seventh place team finish.
Doherty's pick marks the third consecutive year that Villanova has had at least one player drafted into the professional league. 2011 graduate Brian Karalunas is currently a member of the New York Lizards while Cunningham is also rostered with the Hamilton Nationals.
