#23 Men's Lacrosse Ends 2001 Season with 9-4 Rout of Denver

May 4, 2001 VILLANOVA, PA - The #23 Villanova men's lacrosse team scored four unanswered goals in the third quarter to cruise to a 9-4 rout of visiting Denver on Friday, May 4. The victory allows Villanova to end their season on a three-game winning streak and improve to 8-6 overall for the year. The 'Cats will now anxiously await the final STX/USILA national poll to see if they will end the year nationally ranked for the second consecutive season. Denver falls to 6-6 overall with the loss.
The Wildcats dominated the opening three minutes of action, scoring twice in one minute and 11 seconds. Freshman midfielder David Cacciabeve (Boonton Township, NJ/Delbarton) started the scoring with an unassisted tally at the 13:24 mark of the first quarter. He was followed at the 12:13 mark by a goal off the stick of senior Andrew Bogle (Wilton, CT/Wilton). Bogle's tally came courtesy of a feed from sophomore Brian Marks (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown).
Denver would respond over the game's next nine minutes to tie the score at 2-2. Recording goals for the Pioneers were Chad Wittman (Colorado Springs, CO/Vermont Academy) from Mike Law (Englewood, CO/Regis Jesuit) and Law off a feed from Jeff Biggs (St. Louis, MO/The Hyde School). Villanova would regain the lead going into the second quarter when freshman Matt Lucas (Fairfax Station, VA/Paul VI) struck unassisted with 2:05 remaining.
In the second quarter, both teams traded goals to push the score to 4-3 in favor of Villanova heading into halftime. Michael Holloway (Malvern, PA/Malvern Prep) tallied the only goal for the Wildcats at 9:07 of the second quarter. McAdory Lipscomb (Wilton, CT/Wilton) got the goal for Denver, scoring at exactly 2:00 minutes off an assist from Cory Vann.
Leading 4-3 at halftime, Villanova came out of the locker room on fire. The Wildcats completely dominated every aspect of the quarter, outscoring the Pioneers 4-0. Villanova was aided by a perfect five for five performance from Frank Falanga (Manhasset, NY/Manhasset) on face-offs. The Wildcats got their four goals courtesy of four different players all unassisted. Holloway started things off just 16 seconds into the third quarter. Freshman Scott MacMullan (Arnold, MD/Severn) got the second tally a little over three minutes later. Lucas and Bogle would then both get their second goals of the evening with 2:37 and 1:41 remaining in the quarter, respectively.
In the fourth quarter, Denver attempted to come back, but could only get one goal off the stick of Law. Adam Stifel (Bethesda, MD/Avon Old Farms) assisted Law on the play. Villanova's final goal of the 2001 season came from Holloway, his third of the evening, with 1:52 remaining in regulation.
Matt Wilk (Bound Brook, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan) earned the victory in between the pipes, recording 12 saves. He was aided by the stellar defensive play of Brian O'Hagan (Montclair, NJ/Montclair), Chris Bowman (Ellicott City, MD/McDonogh), George Hribar (Garden City, NY/Lawrenceville), Owen Corso (Franklin Lakes, NJ/Ramapo), Eddie Deegan (Massapequa, NY/Massapequa), and Andrew Galano (Glen Head, NY/North Shore). Brian Berger (Phoenix, MD/Boys Latin) took the loss for Denver despite posting 10 saves.
Villanova was one for five on the extra man, while Denver was zero for one. The Pioneers controlled most of the face-offs winning all but seven of the efforts in 17 attempts. The Wildcats dominated statistically in shots, posting 44 to Denver's 27. |
