No. 17 Villanova Races to 11-9 Victory Over Penn State in Regular Season Finale

VILLANOVA, PA. - Senior Richie Kratz scored a career-best six points as No. 17 Villanova defeated Penn State, 11-9, on Senior Night on Friday at Villanova Stadium in men's lacrosse action. With the win, the Wildcats remained perfect at home this season at 8-0 and tied the school's all-time record for wins in a season with 11.
The two teams battled evenly in the first half, with Villanova holding the biggest lead at 2-0 after goals from Dan Fanelli and Matt Starker. The rest of the opening half was nip and tuck with the Wildcats holding leads of 4-3 after the first quarter and 7-6 at halftime.
Mike Jacober tied the game at 7-7 early in the third quarter, but Villanova took the lead right back on a goal by Chris Kramer off a feed from Kratz at 13:04. Later in the third, Nate Whitaker scored his third goal of the game to bring the Nittany Lions even at 8-8 heading into the final period.
The Wildcats started the fourth quarter with unassisted tallies by Kratz and Starker to give themselves a two-goal cushion, 10-8 with 7:19 remaining. Starker then sealed the game with his third goal of the night three minutes later.
Kratz led the Wildcat offense with two goals and four assists, while Starker added three tallies. Chris Kramer notched his first two-goal game of the season and David Cacciabeve and Brendan O'Donnell each registered a goal and an assist.
For the Nittany Lions (5-7), Whitaker piled up three goals and two assists, while Greg Hale added two scores.
In goal, Joseph Canuso finished with 16 saves, while Penn State's Josh LaGrow stopped 12 shots.
Villanova (11-2) will face Delaware in the CAA semifinals on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
