Men's Lacrosse Falls to Georgetown

WASHINGTON, D.C. - The eighth-ranked Georgetown men's lacrosse team jumped out to an 8-0 lead after one quarter of play behind four goals from junior attackman Scott Urick (Fairfax, Va./Robinson) and two goals and three assists from junior All-American Greg McCavera (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) and cruised to a 19-2 victory over Villanova on Saturday, April 25, at Harbin Field. McCavera went on to set the Hoyas' single season scoring record when he picked up his fourth assist and sixth point of the game, giving him 63 points on the season, early in the third quarter. The win was Georgetown's fifth-straight as it improves to 9-3 on the season, while the Wildcats fall to 6-8.
With his six points in the game, McCavera has totaled 63 points (37 goals, 26 assists) on the season to break Mark Murphy's record of 62 points (44 goals, 18 assists) set in 1990. The record-breaking point came on an assist of Urick's fifth goal of the game with 11:13 remaining in the third quarter.
Urick finished with a career-high five goals, while junior attackman Peter Velepec (Rochester, N.Y./Irondequoit) posted two goals and two assists. Freshmen attackmen Jamie Sharpe (Port Jefferson Station, N.Y./Comsewogue) and Tom Tamberinno (Lutherville, Md./Calvert Hall) added a pair of goals apiece for the Hoyas. Sophomore attackman Justin Loonie and sophomore midfielder Eric Dauer scored the Villanova goals.
McCavera got the Hoyas on the scoreboard with an unassisted goal 2:48 into the contest. Urick then tallied three-consecutive goals to put GU up 4-0. Senior midfielder Mike Corry (Norwalk, Conn./Norwalk) assisted on Urick' s first goal at 11:14 and then McCavera assisted on the next two at the 9:27 and 6:47 marks. McCavera then added his second unassisted goal of the contest with 5:33 remaining in the opening period. McCavera found Urick for the fourth time of the quarter, this one on an extra-man situation with 3:55 to go. Velepec pushed the lead to 7-0 with a transition goal off a feed from freshman defenseman Rodger Colbert (Newark, N.J./The Peddie School) with 2:08 left. Sophomore midfielder Matt Gallagher (Lynbrook, N.Y./Lynbrook) closed out the scoring in the first quarter with his first goal off the season off a pass from Velepec.
Senior midfielder Dan Shea (Hauppauge, N.Y./St. Anthony's), Tamberinno, Corry and freshman midfielder Keith Baker (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School) added goals in the second quarter to stake the Hoyas to a 12-0 halftime lead. Villanova got on the scoreboard 1:29 into the third quarter on a goal by Loonie off a feed from junior midfielder David D'Amico. McCavera then earned his record-breaking 63rd point of the season with an assist of Urick's fifth goal with 11:13 left in the third.
Junior Brian Hole (Manlius, N.Y./Fayetteville-Manlius) registered eight saves and did not allow a goal in the first half. Junior Kevin O'Brien (Dennis, Mass./Lincoln-Sudbury) played the third stanza and made two saves while allowing one goal. Freshman Dan Mooney (Baltimore, Md./Gilman School), in his first collegiate appearance, made two saves and allowed one goal in the fourth quarter. Villanova's Brendan Keneally, Matthew Wilk and Michael Mullette combined to make 16 saves while allowing 19 goals.
