Baltimore, MD - On Tuesday, April 3, the Villanova men's lacrosse team traveled south on Interstate95 to do battle with nationally ranked #3 Johns Hopkins in a NCAA Division I men's lacrosse showdown. Johns Hopkins tallied five third quarter goals to Villanova's one goal to pull away and defeat the Wildcats 11-7 in an extremely hard fought and well played game.
The Blue Jays got the scoring started at the 7:01 mark of the first quarter when Conor Denihan tallied unassisted. Trailing 1-0, Villanova took advantage of several key Hopkins turnovers to turn the tide and take a 2-1 lead after one quarter. Scoring first for Villanova was freshman David Cacciabeve (Boonton Township, NJ/Delbarton). Cacciabeve connected from about 10 yards out and directly in front of the goal off a feed from sophomore Brian Marks (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown). Peter Franchetti (Gwynedd Valley, PA/Germantown Academy) got the 'Cats next goal when he gathered a rebound just outside the crease and placed it over the Blue Jay goalkeepers' shoulder.
Leading 2-1 entering the second quarter, Johns Hopkins answered a little less than three minutes in on an unassisted goal by Bobby Benson. The teams would trade two goals apiece over the remaining 12 minutes to allow both teams to enter the half tied. Villanova's two goals came courtesy of Brian Marks and Franchetti. Both players were assisted by freshman Richie Kratz (Succasunna, NJ/Delbarton). Stellar play by senior goalkeeper Matt Wilk (Bound Brook, NJ/Bridgewater-Raritan), including a diving save on a wide open Hopkins shot, allowed Villanova to enter the half tied with the number-three team in the nation.
In the third quarter, Johns Hopkins came out focused and jumped on the Wildcats. Three straight goals over the quarter's opening seven minutes put Villanova in a 7-4 hole. Matt Lucas (Fairfax Station, VA/Paul VI) got the Wildcats back on the board, cutting the lead to two off a beautiful feed from Michael Holloway (Malvern, PA/Malvern Prep). Unfortunately for Villanova, that was the only goal they would get in the quarter, as the Blue Jays would get two more to take a commanding 9-5 lead. Hopkins last two goals came from Adam Doneger and Eric Wedin unassisted. For both players it was their second goals on the evening.
In the fourth, Villanova returned to their play of the first half and got on the board immediately when Brian Marks got his second goal unassisted at the 13:56 mark of the quarter. With the lead trimmed to 9-6, Hopkins again rallied netting the next two goals to put the game away. Brian Marks got his third goal of the game at 6:06 of the quarter to end the scoring. Kratz who tallied a career-high and game- high three assists on the evening assisted Brian Marks tally.
In goal for Villanova, Wilk played his best game of the year in recording 16 saves. On the other side, Rob Scherr recorded 14 saves for Johns Hopkins to record the win. With the loss, Villanova falls to 4-4 overall, while Hopkins improves to 4-2 overall.
