Box Score

Villanova, Pa. - Junior Andy German (Wayne, Pa.) led the charge for Villanova (5-4, 3-0 Colonial Athletic Association) as the Wildcats took control of the game early and rolled to a 15-7 win over CAA foe Sacred Heart (1-7, 1-1 CAA) this afternoon at Villanova Stadium.

German recorded the first four goals of the game. He scored from 15 yards out on his first at 13:04 in the first, knocked one in after racing downfield on a clear at 10:40, and scored again from 15 yards out on the right side at 2:56. German continued his barrage at 13:02 in the second, off an assist from senior Matt Starker (Summit, N.J.), on a close range bounce shot.

"We knew Andy was capable of that kind of performance," said coach Randy Marks. "We've just been waiting for it. He did a great job for us. This was a great conference win, and it puts in a good position to earn a spot in the CAA Tournament."

`Nova's Matt Panneton (Severna Park, Md.) scored at 2:22 before the half, with an assist from sophomore Eric Bloom (Englewood, Colo.), and Sacred Heart's Kiel Adams got the Pioneers on the board just 40 seconds before the break with a score after a flurry of activity in front of the goal to make it 5-1.

SHU got two unassisted goals from Matthew Robideau and Bobby Karl to pull within two, 5-3, at 9:27 in the third. German answered with his fifth goal of the game at 7:42 on a 15 yard laser. Peter Greco scored for the Pioneers to again cut Sacred Heart's deficit to two goals, 6-4, with 5:28 left. But that would be the last serious threat the Pioneers mounted as Villanova scored the next four straight goals to go up 10-4.

Villanova out-scored Sacred Heart 7-3 in the last quarter. Sophomore Chris MacDonald (Westfield, N.J.) and Panneton teamed up for a pair of identical goals to start the fourth. Panneton, behind the goal, set up MacDonald to score from the left side at 14:19 and again ten seconds later. Pioneer Tony Tanzi, set up by Adams, scored at 13:28 before Villanova and SHU each scored on an extra man opportunity.

MacDonald scored his third goal after SHU's Brett McGlensey was called for slashing and sophomore Billy Fuchs scored after VU's Chad Houser drew a pushing penalty.

`Nova posted the next three consecutive goals to take a 14-6 lead with 3:43 remaining. Robideau buried a laser from 20 yards out on an extra man opportunity with 1:05 to go before `Nova's Kevin Kinsella (West Chester, Pa.) fed fellow freshman Michael Mullett (Manlius, N.Y.) for Mullett's first college goal and the final score.

Sacred Heart goalie Jim Millhausen made 22 saves for the Pioneers. Wildcat goalie Joe Canuso (Moorestown, N.J.) made 11.

Villanova out-shot Sacred Heart 54-25 and won the groundball battle 52-31. The Wildcats also secured 18 of 25 face-offs.
