Wildcats Defeat Maryland 13-12 in Overtime Thriller

Final Stats

Danny Seibel scored a goal in overtime on a pass from Jake Froccaro to give the Wildcats their first win ever against Maryland by a final of 13-12.

Villanova started off strong leading 3-1 at the end of the first quarter.  Jake Froccaro netted the first goal for the Cats on a pass from TJ Comizio.  Maryland's Connor Kelly scored the Terrapins first goal just minutes later before the Wildcats went on a 2-0 run.  Christian Cuccinello and Danny Seibel scored both goals, Seibel's goal was assisted by Jake Froccaro.

The Wildcats continued the run in the second quarter, Jake Froccaro scored his second goal on a pass from Jack Curran, and next it was Seibel who found the back of the net with the assist credited to Jared Nugent. Cuccinello scored the final goal of the Wildcats five goal run at the 11:58 minute on a pass from Comizio.

Maryland was able to score three of the final four goals before halftime to make the Wildcats lead 7-4 heading into the locker room.  Freshman Connor Kirst scored on a pass from Comizio with just over three minutes to go before halftime.


 

 

Jack Curran netted his first goal to start the second half, Maryland's Tim Rotanz netted the next goal but the Wildcats were able to score the next two goals.  Curran scored the first and Seibel the second on a pass from Joey Froccaro.  Maryland was able to net two goals before the end of the 3rd quarter to make the score 10-7 Villanova with 15 minutes to play.

All eight goals scored in the fourth quarter were unassisted, it started with a Cuccinello goal less than a minute in before Maryland netted one of their own.  Next Jake Froccaro scored what would be Villanova's last goal of the quarter before Maryland went on a four goal run, three of the goals were scored by Matt Rambo.  This tied the game up a 12-12 at the end of regulation.

With just 33 seconds to go in the first overtime, Jake Froccaro found Danny Seibel just yards away from the goal and he was able to score the game winning goal to give Villanova their first win ever against Maryland.

Nick Testa played the first 30 minutes in goal and ended with two saves, a ground ball, and a caused turnover. Dan Willis saw action from the third quarter on and had five saves and one ground ball. 

Villanova went 10-for-29 from the X and had 22 ground balls on the day, Jake Froccaro had a team high six and went 7-for-17 from faceoff.  Freshman Patrick Kennedy had two ground balls and two caused turnovers and Comizio had a career high three assists and two ground balls.

The Wildcats will return to action on Tuesday, March 21st when they host Bucknell.  The game was rescheduled after super storm Stella hit Villanova last Tuesday, March 14th.  Game time is set for 4 p.m. inside Villanova Stadium.
