March 9, 2001

Philadelphia, PA - On Friday, March 9, the Villanova Wildcat men's lacrosse team traveled south to Philadelphia to do battle in famed Franklin Field against city rival Drexel. Battling the freezing cold and a three-goal deficit with less than four minutes to play, the Wildcats tallied twice to narrow the margin to one with 24 seconds remaining. Unfortunately for Villanova, Drexel was able to subdue Villanova's last ditch attempt and escape with an 8-7 victory. With the loss, Villanova falls to 1-2, while Drexel improves to 2-1.

Drexel jumped in front early by recording the only two scores of the first quarter. For the Dragons, Pat Friel and Jeff Spano connected to give them a 2-0 advantage at the end of one quarter. In the second quarter, Villanova responded when senior attackman Andrew Bogle (Wilton, CT/Wilton) struck on a feed from Brian Marks (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) just two minutes into the quarter. A little over six minutes later, Brian Marks followed up Bogle's tally with one of his own on an assist from Michael Holloway (Malvern, PA/Malvern Prep). With the score deadlocked at 2-2 Drexel's Mark Williamson responded with a goal from Scott Stewart. Villanova would even the score back up at 3-3 going into halftime when Justin Marks (Downingtown, PA/Downingtown) received a Bogle pass and hammered it home.

In the second half, Drexel again came out strong and put Villanova behind two for the second time in the game. The Dragon's Jason Kilpatrick and Joe Iannarino both tallied after passes from Jeff Spano. Trailing 5-3, Villanova fought back when junior defenseman Chris Bowman (Ellicott City, MD/McDonogh) raced the length of the field and bounced a shot past Drexel keeper Jordie Olivella. Entering the fourth quarter trailing by one goal, Villanova looked to their potent attack and were rewarded. Brian Marks found the back of the net just one minute and 19 seconds into the quarter to tie the game back up at 5-5.

Drexel responded well to the adversity as Spano, Kilpatrick, and Williamson all struck over the next ten minutes to take a commanding 8-5 lead with less than four minutes remaining. Villanova fought back to bring the score to within one with 24 seconds left in regulation. Bogle tallied first for the 'Cats, hitting from about 15 feet out off of a pass from Holloway. Justin Marks followed soon after striking off a feed from Randall Calvert (Ellicott City, MD/Centennial).

With time running out, Villanova controlled the face-off but could not get any offense to materialize. A check from a Dragon defender knocked the ball back to midfield ending the Wildcats hopes. Villanova will be in action next on March 14 when they travel to Lafayette to do battle at 3:30 p.m.
