Vestal, N.Y. - Freshman CJ Small (San Diego, Calif.) recorded the game winning goal for the Wildcats over Binghamton (0-4) less than a minute into overtime. With the victory, Villanova moves to 4-0 for the first time in the programs history.
Small, the CAA Rookie of the Week, had two goals in the contest to give him four on the season. He along with senior Matthew Fritts (Dallas, Tex.), put Villanova up 2-0 early in the game.
The Bearcats would answer with six goals in a row, three by Andy Cook, to give Binghamton a 6-2 lead at the half.
Villanova freshman Matt Bell (Severna Park, Md.) led the comeback less than two minutes into the second half. Bell now has two goals on the season including his career first against Penn.
Senior Chris MacDonald (Westfield, N.J.), who finished the day with a goal and four assists, continued the Wildcats offensive surge by scoring at the 12:32 mark in the fourth quarter. Sophomore Chris Aitken (Haverford, Pa.) followed with a goal of his own with 11:02 remaining in the game.
With time running out and the Wildcats down one, sophomore Mike Brennan (Manhasset, N.Y.), who leads the Wildcats with eight assists, put the ball in the net to tie the score at six and send the game into overtime.
Small's goal in overtime, the fifth unanswered goal by the Wildcats, would complete the comeback and keep the Villanova win streak at four.
Senior Andrew DiLoreto (Wilton, Conn.) had another solid day in the net for Villanova recording three saves. Entering the game, DiLoreto led the nation in save percentage and was second in goals-against average.
Binghamton goalie Larry Kline tallied 12 saves in the loss while Andy Cook led on the offensive side with three goals for the Bearcats.
Villanova returns to action next Tuesday March 10th when they take on Penn State at home. The game is scheduled for 4 p.m. at Villanova Stadium.
