Villanova, PA - Fighting constant drizzle and heavy fog the entire game, the Villanova men's lacrosse team forged on and defeated city rival St. Joseph's in their season opener, 12-6. The victory improves Villanova's record to 1-0 overall, while St. Joseph's falls to 0-1. Trailing 3-2 at the end of the first quarter, Villanova responded by tallying three times in the second quarter to take a 5-4 lead at the half. Three different Wildcats scored for Villanova during the run including freshman Richie Kratz (Succasunna, NJ/Delbarton) who netted his first career goal on the Main Line with 10 seconds remaining in the half. Also tallying first half goals for the 'Cats were senior Andrew Bogle (Wilton, CT/Wilton) one goal, junior Justin Marks (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown) one goal, senior Jesse Ford (Wilton, CT/Wilton) one goal, and Brian Marks (Glenmoore, PA/Downingtown) one goal and two assists. Michael Holloway (Malvern, PA/Malvern Prep) chalked up an assist on Brian Marks' goal.
After an early third quarter score by the Hawks deadlock the score at 5-5, Villanova used seven second half goals, including the last four from Justin Marks to cruise to the victory. Bogle got things started in the right direction in the first half when he tallied the Wildcats first goal on an assist from Brian Marks. The two were at it again at the beginning of the second half when Bogle netted his second goal of the game on another assist from Brian Marks at the 7:17 mark of the third quarter. Two back to back unassisted goals by Kratz and Brian Marks extended Villanova's lead to 8-5. Justin Marks tallied one goal on an assist from Bogle and two more unassisted tallies, before St. Joe's responded with their lone fourth quarter goal with four minutes remaining. Marks would score one more time in the fourth quarter, allowing him to close out Villanova's scoring by netting the last four goals. Recording an assist on Marks' last goal was Holloway who fed Marks in the slot to end the game's scoring and allow the Wildcats to walk away 12-6 winners.
In net for the Wildcats, Matt Wilk was stellar recording eight saves. The senior captain was phenomenal from the second quarter on, as he allowed just two more Hawk tallies. Mike Mullette allowed the final St. Joes' goal after entering the game in its final six minutes. Villanova won 13 of 21 face-offs, and outshot the Hawks 46-20. Villanova also won the battle for groundballs, collecting 39 of the 58 lose balls.
