Joe Canuso returns for his eighth season on the Villanova sidelines as a Volunteer Assistant Coach for the 2013-2014 season. His responsibilities include assisting in goalkeeper and defensive development.
Canuso, a four-year starter and captain for the Wildcats, graduated as one of the most decorated athletes in program history. The Moorestown, N.J. native is Villanova's all-time leader with 672 saves and spent most of his career at the top of NCAA standings in save percentage and goals against average. He still holds the Colonial Athletic Association single-season record for goals against average with 6.07 in 2003.
Most recently in 2010, Canuso was honored by the CAA and named to its Silver Anniversary Team, honoring the most outstanding athletes to play men's lacrosse in the conference since it became a championship sport in 2002.
As a player, Canuso amassed an impressive list of accolades including being named the 2004 CAA Player of the Year and 2003 CAA Rookie of the Year. He was a three-time selection to the CAA Second Team and earned CAA First Team honors during the 2004 season. For his final season in 2006, Canuso was tabbed as a Preseason All-American, named to the Tewaaraton Trophy Watch List and was selected to play in the prestigious USILA Division I North/South Senior All-Star game.
Following the conclusion of his collegiate career, Canuso was drafted by the Philadelphia Barrage in the 2006 MLL Draft before joining the Long Island Lizards the following season.
Canuso, a 2006 Villanova alumnus, graduated with a Bachelor of Science degree in Communications. He currently resides in Conshohocken, Pa. and works as a manager in shipping and receiving for Louis P. Canuso Inc.
