PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Villanova senior Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) has been named the BIG EAST Men's Golf Player of the Month, as announced by the conference office Wednesday afternoon. Kania earns his first BIG EAST Men's Golf Player of the Month laurels by notching two top-3 finishes in the Wildcats three tournaments to date.
The senior captain had his highest finish of the season at the CHAMPS/Patriot Intercollegiate at Laurel Hills Golf Club in Lorton, Va. where he finished tied for second and fell just two strokes shy of a victory over No. 3 Jace Long of No. 11 Missouri. Kania shot a 211 (71-72-68) to help the Wildcats to a third-place team finish last week on Sept. 29th and 30th.
Two weeks earlier, Kania finished tied for third at the Adams Cups of Newport at the Newport Country Club/Carnegie Abbey Club in Newport, R.I., with a score of 215 (69-73-73). He began the season with a tied for 19th place individual finish at the Turning Stone Tiger Intercollegiate where he finished with a weekend total of 220 (75-72-73).
Kania has been the top finisher for Villanova in all three of its tournaments to date, shooting an average of 71 over nine rounds of golf.
Kania and the Wildcats will be back in action next week for the BIG 5 Invitational in Huntington Valley, Pa. The all day event begins on Saturday, Oct. 13th and concludes a day later on Sunday, Oct. 14th.
