Golf Season Begins with Two Rounds of Play at Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J.--The Villanvoa golf team opened its season on Friday at the Rutgers Men's Golf Invitational. All participating teams got in two rounds of golf on Friday, and the scores become final when Saturday's final round was cancelled due to heavy rains.
Eight teams competed in the weekend tournament at the par-71 course which measures 6,337 yards. The host Scarlet Knights produced identical rounds of 282-282=564 to win the tournament by a 12-stroke margin over the University of Maryland. Villanova produced team scores of 297-306=603 and was in eighth place, eight strokes behind Seton Hall (595). Loyola College and Columbia tied for third place, while Connecticut placed fifth and St. John's came in sixth.
Junior Jonathan Hewett (Sioux Falls, S.D.) was the top Wildcat finisher after carding rounds of 75-72=147 to sit in a tie for 18th place in the field of 44 golfers. Sophomore Brock Bergman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) added scores of 73-79=152 and tied for 29th place. Junior Henry Watson (Pittsburgh, Pa.) shot 77-78=155 and was in 36th place, just two strokes ahead of senior captain Charlie Nettleton (Lisle, Ill.), who fired an opening round of 72 before slipping to an 85 in the second round. Sophomore Brian Feeney (Pelham, N.Y.) shot 81-77=158 and was one stroke behind Nettleton.
Jason Bataille of Rutgers took medalist honors with a six-under-par performance that included backt-to-back rounds of 68. He beat out Chris Bondello of Columbia, who was three strokes off the pace.
Villanova returns to action next weekend when it participates in The McLaughlin, hosted by St. John's. The tournament is a three-day, 54-hole event contested on the Red course at Bethpage State Park. The Red Course is a par-70 that measures 6,868 yards.
