NORMAN, Okla. - Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) has been named a Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar, as announced on Wednesday afternoon in Normal, Okla. The award caps an outstanding career for Kania who adds the honor to a bevy of accolades received throughout his career with Villanova.
To be eligible for Cleveland Golf/Srixon All-America Scholar status an individual must be a junior or senior academically, compete in at least three full years at the collegiate level, participate in 50-percent of his team's competitive rounds or compete in the NCAA Championships, have a stroke-average under 76.0 in Division I and maintain a minimum cumulative grade-point average of 3.2. A recipient must also be of high moral character and be in good standing at his college or university.
Kania finished an outstanding collegiate career in 2012-13 and has received a steady stream of recognition for his success. He was named to both the All-BIG EAST Team and the Division I PING All-Region squad, earning both honors for the second straight year. Kania was also the BIG EAST Golfer of the Month in October. He transferred to Villanova following his freshman season at Kentucky and in his three years with the Wildcats amassed 16 top-20 finishes, eight top-10 finishes and two individual championships while compiling a composite 73.9 stroke average.
Earlier this year Kania was named as the 2012-13 American Eagle Outfitters Male Institutional Scholar-Athlete of the Year by the BIG EAST and in May he was named the Villanova Male Senior Student-Athlete of the Year. Kania was voted the 2012-13 Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Performer of the Year for golf. He is a two-time member of the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area team and a three-time selection to the BIG EAST All-Academic Team. Kania also served as the president of the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee at Villanova for the 2012-13 academic year. He graduated in May with a degree in Communication.
