VILLANOVA, Pa. - Senior Brian Colbert (Cary, Ill.) and junior Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) were each named to the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Team for golf earlier today. The team is voted on by sports information directors at 28 institutions from the Philadelphia area and is based on both athletic and academic achievements. This is the first time in the seven years that the team has been named that Villanova has had more than one of its student-athletes selected to the squad of six golfers.

Colbert and Kania were both instrumental towards a successful season for the Wildcats, which included a third place team finish at the BIG EAST Championships earlier this spring. Kania was a unanimous selection to the All-BIG EAST squad and both he and Colbert were picked for the PING All-Northeast Region team.

Outside of competition Kania is a Communications major and began the spring semester with a 3.50 cumulative grade-point average. Colbert had a 3.418 GPA as an Accounting major in the Villanova School of Business and both student-athletes were named BIG EAST Academic All-Stars for the 2010-11 academic year.

During the 2011-12 season Kania led the team with a 73.36 stroke average and was the team's leader in scoring four times in 11 tournaments for the year. He placed in the top-10 of the individual standings three times for the season and added three more top-20 finishes. Among his highlights for the year were tying for third place individually at the BIG EAST Championships with a 54-hole score of four-under par 212. He was also the individual champion at the Pinehurst Invitational with a score of 210 (-3) over three rounds.

Colbert was second on the team to Kania in scoring last season with a 74.00 stroke average. He was also one of the team's most consistent players, with 26 of his 28 rounds (93%) for the year counting towards the team score. Colbert was among the individual top-20 at tournaments five times, including a pair of top-10 finishes. His top-10 finishes came in consecutive outings at the Wildcat Invitational and the Navy Invitational, where he tied for sixth place and ninth place, respectively.

Scotty Williams of Penn was named the Philadelphia Inquirer Academic All-Area Golf Performer of the Year, while the Academic All-Area Golf Team consisted of Williams, Colbert, Kania, P.J. Fielding (Penn), Kyle Knapp (Swarthmore) and Michael Serensits (Drexel).

In order to be eligible for the Academic All-Area teams a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.20 cumulative grade-point average while being at least a sophomore academically and a significant contributor to his or her team.

With several spring teams still to be announced the Wildcats have had a total of 13 student-athletes named to the Academic All-Area teams for the 2011-12 academic year.
