BIG EAST Championship Final Results

REUNION, Fla. - Following the final round of the BIG EAST Men's Golf Championship held at the par-72, 7,089-yard Watson Course in Reunion, Fla., the Villanova Wildcats finished in 8th place in the 12 team field after three days of competition. The Wildcats shot their best round of the championship and finished with a 297-303-294--894 (+30) total for the tournament as the Wildcats capped off an excellent season with a strong effort.

Along the way, all five Villanova golfers finished inside the top-55 golfers overall, with seniors Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) and Derek Jones (Lower Burrell, Pa.) inside the top-25. The Wildcats finished just three strokes behind seventh place Marquette while South Florida pulled away for the team victory at 858 (-6).

Kania led the way finishing in a tie for 22nd place with a 76-72-73--221 (+5) to polish off an impressive showing while Jones was the next finisher for the Wildcats, tying for 25th place overall with a BIG EAST performance of 74-78-70-222 (+6).

Graduate student Cory Siegfried (Villanova, Pa.) notched the third best showing for the Wildcats and tallied an eagle in the competition to finish at 73-77-75--225 (+9) and tied for 35th place overall. Senior Steve Skurla (Wheaton, Ill.) was the fourth finisher for Villanova and tallied a 76 on the day for a three day total of 74-79-76--229 (+13). Sophomore Ted Brennan (Newtown Square, Pa.) rounded out the Villanova top-5 and placed 54th in the competition with rounds of 81-76-79--236 (+20).

The USF Bulls pulled away for the victory and beat second-place St. John's by four strokes to claim the championship. Notre Dame, Louisville and Connecticut rounded out the top five team placements while DePaul, Marquette, Villanova, Cincinnati, Rutgers, Georgetown and Seton Hall finalized the team showings.



Cincinnati's David Tepe narrowly edged out USF's Chase Koepka for the individual championship and finished at -8 over three days with rounds of 69-69-70--208 (-8). Notre Dame's Cory Sciupider took home third place laurels and finished with the lowest round of the day by carding a 69.

The BIG EAST Championship marks the end of the 2012-13 year for Villanova, who had an outstanding season of competition. Five Wildcats will graduate this May - Cory Siegfried, Steve Skurla, Michael Kania, Derek Jones and Jimmy Johnston.
