Men's Golf Sits At Twelfth After First Round Of Colonial Intercollegiate

WILLIAMSBURG, VA. ----- In its first action in nearly five months the Villanova men's golf team hit the links at the Colonial Intercollegiate, hosted by William & Mary and currently sits at 12th place at the completion of the first round. The Wildcat golfers combined to shoot 315 (+27). The tournament includes 18 collegiate teams and consists of two rounds played on the par-72, 6,868-yard Golden Horseshoe Golf Course in Williamsburg, Va. Freshman Shawn Standen (Avon Lakes, Ohio) led the Wildcats with an opening round 77 (+5) and stands in 31st place. Standen, who fired a front nine total of 41, finished strong with a 36-stroke back nine. Other Villanova leaders include a pair of freshman, Ben Eisner (Nags Head, N.C.) and Charlie Nettleton (Lisle, Ill.), who are knotted at 47th overall with a first round scores of 79 (+7). Sophomore John Keller (Bayside, N.Y.) started off strong with a 37 on the front nine, but sputtered in the closing nine holes shooting 43 to finish the day eight-over-par (80). The final Wildcat participant, sophomore Matt Gugino (Leroy, N.Y.), shot 82 (+10) and sits at 71st entering the final round. The final round of the Colonial Intercollegiate will be held on Tuesday, March 26. The Wildcats will then return home and prepare for the Navy Invitational to be held on April 5-7 in Annapolis, Md.
