Golf stays south for 18-hole stroke play match against Coastal Georgia and St. Joseph’s (ME)

VILLANOVA, Pa.- The Villanova golf team will be staying down south the weekend as they will face Coastal Georgia and Saint Joseph’s College (Maine) in an 18-hole stroke play match this Friday. Tee times begin at 8:50 a.m. The match will take place at the Sea Island Golf Club Retreat Course on St. Simons Island, Ga.

The Wildcats are just coming off their first tournament of the spring season as they wrapped up play at the Fort Lauderdale Intercollegiate in Fort Lauderdale, Fla. The team placed 14th in the tournament with Senior Andy Butler leading the team in scoring as he placed tied for 30th overall after carding rounds of 73-75-74 = 222 (+6).

For the match the Villanova will be sending out senior Will Byrne, freshman Reb Banas and Matt Barnes, senior Zach Egermayer, sophomore captain Connor Daly, and senior Andy Butler.  Sophomore Connor Downey and junior Andrew Bowyer will compete as individuals.

Coastal Georgia is one of the top NAIA programs in the nation. In the last NAIA Men’s Golf Coaches’ Top 25 Poll that was released on Sept. 29, the team was ranked at No. 5. The Mariners recently finished playing in the USCB Sand Shark Invitational, where they finished in second place out of 15 teams. Coastal Georgia also had two golfers finish in the top 10 at the tournament.



Saint Joseph’s College is Division III school that is just starting their spring season on Friday. The Monks are coming off competing in the NEIGA (New England Intercollegiate Golf Association) Championships where the team placed 17th. Cam Letourneau had the best score for the Monks as he placed 39th with scores of 80-79=159 (+15).
