SAUCON, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats continued their dominance of the Lehigh Invitational to bring home a first place team finish following the conclusion of the two day event at Saucon Valley Country Club in Saucon, Pa. The victory marks the first of the season for the Wildcats and the first in Head Coach Jim Wilkes' career at Villanova.
Making the day even sweeter was the 1-2 finish of seniors Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) and Steve Skurla (Wheaton, Ill.), who never gave up their leads and finished the two-day tournament carding rounds of 68-75--143 (-1) and 70-74--144 (E), respectively. The win marks the first of Kania's career and is the two best finishes the duo has recorded in each of their careers.
Villanova ran away with the team competition after concluding Saturday's round with a 284 team score and repeating another solid performance with a 296 on Sunday. The two-day combined rounds of 580 gave the Wildcats a 16 stroke lead in front of their nearest competition of Rutgers, who finished second overall with a combined total of 596. Fordham, Lehigh, Bucknell, Lafayette, Siena and Colgate rounded out the eight team competition.
The Wildcats placed four individuals in the top-10 with Cory Siegfried (Villanova, Pa.) finished tied for 3rd place with a two-day total of 146 (+2) and Ted Brennan taking home 6th place laurels with a weekend total of 147 (+3). Derek Jones rounded out the VU competitors and carded a 160 (+16) to tie for 30th place.
Bucknell's Luke Edelman, Rutgers Doug Walters and Siegfried all tied for third place behind Kania and Skurla, with Walters winning the tie-breaker after he carded a low round of 71 for Sunday.
