JAMAICA, N.Y. - The Villanova men's golf team competed at the McLaughlin on Sept. 26-27. The tournament, hosted by St. John's University, was held at Bethpage, home of the 2002 U.S. Open. The Wildcats had their best showing of the young season, finishing in 9th place among the 13-team field, with an overall score of 886.

Senior John Keller led Villanova to the finish, shooting an eight-over par 218, good enough for 26th place. Teammate Colin Mahon finished right behind Keller with a 219.

Rounding out the scores for Villanova were Jonathan Hewett with a 224, Charlie Nettleton with a 227 and Matt Gugino with a 231.

The University of Maryland won the team championship, finishing with a three-under par 837. The Terrapins finished seven strokes ahead of the tournament runner-up, Temple.

The individual title was taken by Maryland's Dan MacDonald, who rallied with a third round 65 to finish at seven-under par, one shot better than Temple's Bill Mullen.

The Wildcats are back in action today, as they travel to Leesburg, Va. for a one-day event at the George Washington/Rehoboth Beach Invitational. Rehoboth Beach was the sight of Villanova sophomore Henry Watson's individual championship last spring.
