FARMINGDALE, N.Y. - Sophomore Colin List opened the weekend with a round of 1-under par 69 on Friday and stayed on track through the weekend to finish in a tie for 16th place out of 93 individuals at The McLaughlin, hosted by St. John's at the Bethpage Red Course. As a team, Villanova came in 15th out of 18 schools at the tournament.
List's opening round score was the lowest of his collegiate career and the score relative to par matched a collegiate best. He followed that up with a round of 74 to close out play on Friday and then fired a 72 on Saturday to finish the weekend at 69-74-72=215 (+5). List was the lone Wildcat to finish in the top-20 of the individual standings.
Villanova registered team scores of 293-306-289=888 (+48) during the weekend, with the final round score marking the team's lowest stroke total since a round of 285 in the second round of the Bradford Creek Intercollegiate on April 2, 2007. The Wildcats received four scores of 76 or better in that final round.
Freshman Brendan Kelly tied for 43rd place overall with scores of 75-77-69=221 (+11) and matched List with the team's only scores under par for the weekend. Senior Doug Stadler was tied for 54th place after carding scores of 76-75-72=223 (+13) and classmate Paul Sjoberg tied for 77th place with rounds of 73-80-76=229 (+19). Sophomore Conor Casey rounded out the Wildcat starting five by recording rounds of 76-80-77=233 (+23) to tie for 84th place.
In addition to the five players in its lineup, Villanova also debuted freshman Joe Barnard, who played as an individual in the tournament field. Barnard opened the weekend with a score of 78 in the first round but then rebounded to shoot 71-74 the remainder for the remainder of the tournament. He matched Stadler in a tie for 54th place with a 54-hole total of 223 (+13).
The Wildcats will be idle this coming weekend before returning to action October 3-5 at the Mission Inn Classic, hosted by St. John's in Howey in the Hills, Fla.
