PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Freshman Doug Stadler (Wexford, Pa.) fired a two-under-par 69 in the final round on Saturday afternoon, and Villanova went on to a 10th place finish at the Rutgers Invitational in its first tournament of the season. The Wildcats posted a team score of 295 on Saturday after registering scores of 295 and 300 in the first two rounds of the 54-hole tournament on Friday.

Stadler's score on Saturday was bested by just one other golfer in the field of 71, and he wound up with a three-day score of 77-74-69=220 (+7) to earn team medalist honors in his first collegiate event. Stadler was tied for 25th place overall in the individual standings.

Villanova's final team score was 295-300-295=890 (+38), good for 10th place in the field of 13 teams. Columbia earned the tournament title after shooting an even-par 852. The Lions finished four strokes ahead of St. John's, which led six Big East teams at the tournament with a score of 854. Host Rutgers, Longwood and Delaware rounded out the top five in the field.

Junior Steve Arnold (Langhorne, Pa.) and senior Jonathan Hewett (Sioux Falls, S.D.) each carded a 75 in the final round for the Wildcats. Arnold finished in a tie for 37th place with scores of 72-76-75=223 and finished second on the team to Stadler. Junior Brock Bergman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) and freshman Andrew Alexander (Rochester, Minn.) were each tied for 42nd place with a three-round total of 225. Bergman posted a 76 in his round on Saturday, while Alexander came in with a 77. Hewett was tied for 55th place with a score of 230.

Joe Mclister of Delaware was the individual champion with a five-under-par score of 208. He shot a 69 in the final round on Saturday to hold off competitors from Columbia and Delaware.

 

 

Villanova senior Colin Mahon (Rhinebeck, N.Y.) played in the tournament as an individual, and finished in a tie for 30th place with a score of 73-73-75=221. He had the low score among the six players competing in the tournament as individuals.

The Wildcats are next in action at the St. John's/McLaughlin next Friday and Saturday. The tournament is played at the Bethpage Red Course in Farmingdale, N.Y.

NOTES: The Rutgers Golf Course is located on campus in Piscataway, N.J. and is a par-71 venue ... The course measures 6,337 yards from the back tees ... The Wildcats average round during the three rounds of the tournament was 74.17 ... That marked an improvement from last season, when Villanova averaged a 75.38 score in a two-round event at Rutgers ... The Wildcats finished fifth among the six Big East teams at Rutgers, two strokes ahead of Seton Hall.
