Villanova Starts Strong in Third Place at BIG EAST Championships
Michael Kania is the top scorer for the Wildcats through one day

ORLANDO, Fla. - The Villanova golf team got off to a great start at the 12-team BIG EAST Championships being played at the par-72, 7,089-yard Watson Course by shooting a 293 (+5) which puts them alone in 3rd place. They are nine shots off the pace set by Notre Dame, who is holding a one shot advantage over Louisville. All five Villanova golfers are in 28th place or better in the 60-player field with junior Michael Kania leading the team in a tie for 4th place.

Kania shot a 70 (-2) and is just three shots behind the leader, Louisville's Justin Dorward.

Junior Derek Jones and senior Bret McGaughey each shot a 74 (+2) which puts them in a tie for 21st.

Senior Brian Colbert and junior Steve Skurla shot a 75 (+3) which places them in a tie for 28th.

Last season, Kania, along with Brendan Kelly and Conor Casey were the top finishers for the Wildcats in a tie for 10th place.

In today's round, Kania finds himself near the top of the leaderboard due to his play on par 4s throughout the first day. The junior shot -3 on the 10 par 4s on the course which was 4th best in the field.

McGaughey was the top scorer for the Wildcats on par 3s and tied for 2nd in the field shooting -1 on the four par 3s.

The second round will get underway tomorrow morning at 8 am as the Wildcats look to climb the leaderboard.
