Wildcats Stand in 11th Place after Opening Round of BIG EAST Championship

DADE CITY, Fla. - Sophomore Brendan Kelly (Annapolis, Md.) carded a team-best round of 75 on Sunday afternoon in the first round of the BIG EAST Championship at Lake Jovita Golf and Country Club, where Villanova stands in 11th place in the team standings with a score of 312.
Kelly birdied five holes in his round and tied for third among 60 golfers with a composite -3 scoring on the par-5 holes at the course. Sophomore Conor Casey (Madison, N.J.) was second on the team to Kelly with a round of 78 and is tied for 41st in the tournament field. He led a group of three Wildcats within two strokes of each other.
Senior Brett Bergman (Pittsburgh, Pa.) registered 11 pars during his round and shot a 79, while classmate Doug Stadler (Wexford, Pa.) finished with an 80. Bergman is tie for 44th place and Stadler is in a tie for 47th entering the second round on Monday. Sophomore Colin List (Boynton Beach, Fla.) had the team's drop score of 82 and is in 54th place.
Louisville holds the team lead after one round of competition with a team score of 282, three strokes ahead of Seton Hall and the rest of the 12-team field. Four of the Cardinals five players shot under par during their round. A pair of golfers from the Pirates - Dave Sampson and John Zur - posted rounds of 69 (-3) to tie for first place individually after Sunday's round.
The second round of the championship tees off at 8 a.m. on Monday morning. Villanova's tee times begin at 8 a.m. and the Wildcats will be paired with Connecticut and Cincinnati during the round. List tees off first for Villanova and Kelly holds the team's final tee time at 8:40 a.m.
