MALVERN, Pa. - Villanova junior Steve Skurla (77-67-76--220; +7) finished in a tie for 3rd in the 78-player field and senior Brian Colbert (78-75-72--225; +12) placed in a tie for 6th to put two Wildcats in the top-10 at the Villanova-hosted Wildcat Invitational being played at the 7,055-yard, par-71 White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa. As a team, the Wildcats battled through a tough first round to place in 4th out of 14 teams with a 313-297-292--902 (+50) as conditions were considerably more favorable for today's third and final round.
Ohio State took home the team crown with an 891 and the Buckeyes' Matthew Turner took the individual title with a 212 (-1).
"White Manor is an outstanding facility to host a tournament at and we were excited to have such a successful event for the second straight year", said Head Coach James Wilkes, "We had a great field this year and that was represented by a strong champion in Ohio State. We were especially proud of our guys after falling behind through one round yesterday, yet they continued to fight and make quality shots on a tough course to climb all the way up to fourth in the standings. We feel very good about the way we finished this tournament moving into our final two events of the season."
Skurla placed second in the event last year and followed that up with a strong third place finish this season. After shooting the low round of the tournament in yesterday's second round with a 4-under 67, the junior had an up-and-down third round. He struggled early as he was 7-over through five holes, but he battled back with five birdies over the final thirteen holes to finish with a 5-over 76. It's his second top-ten finish of the season.
Colbert improved in every round throughout the tournament as he notched his first top-10 finish of the season. He had four birdies on the day capped by back-to-back birdies on the 17th and 18th holes to finish the tournament on a high note. Senior Bret McGaughey (79-77-72--228; +15) had a steady third round with one birdie and fifteen pars to garner his first top-20 of the season in a tie for 16th.
Rounding out the top-five for Villanova was sophomore Robby Meador (79-80-77-236; +23) and junior Michael Kania (88-78-72--238; +25) finished in a tie for 39th and 47th, respectively.
The Wildcats had three individuals competing as well in the event. Junior Derek Jones (81-80-75--236; +23), junior Jimmy Johnston (82-79-77--238; +25), and sophomore Vince Boyle (81-80-80--241; +28) finished in a tie for 39th, 47th, and 54th, respectively.
After successfully hosting the Wildcat Invitational for the second straight season, Villanova will head to Annapolis for the Navy Spring Invitational on April 21-22.
