Skurla Places Second Overall; Paces Villanova to Third Place Team Finish at Wildcat Invitational

MALVERN, Pa. - In the final day of the Wildcat Invitational at White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa., the Villanova Wildcats finished tied for third and 13th place overall as the two teams competed against 13 other squads in Villanova's home event.
Senior co-captain Steve Skurla (Wheaton, Ill.) finished as the top Villanova finisher for the tournament in second place in the individual standings with a final round of 73 (+2) and a three round total of 217 (73-71-73--217; +4). Sophomore Ted Brennan (Newtown Square, Pa.) carded a final round of 77 to place tied for 11th place overall (76-74-77--227; +14) while senior co-captain Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) place tied for 13th with rounds of 77-73-78--228 (+15). Senior Derek Jones (Lower Burrell, Pa.) and graduate student Cory Siegfried (Villanova, Pa.) rounded out the Villanova finishers on the first Wildcat team tied for 35th and 42nd place after carding final rounds of 78 and 77 to put them at 234 (+21) and 235 (+22) for the event.
On the second Villanova team competing at White Manor Country Club, juniors Robby Meador (Miami Lakes, Fla.) and Vince Boyle (Philadelphia, Pa.) paced the `Cats tied for 48th place with rounds of 78 and 80 on the day for a three day total of 237 (+24). Freshman Luke Waggoner (Crystal Lake, Ill.), who placed 58th overall, notched a 81 on the day for a three-day total of 241 (+28) (77-83-81). Sophomore Scott Miller (Madison, N.J.) rounded out the team tied for 68th place (87-84-78--249; +36). Freshman Jessie Stephens (Akron, Ohio), competing as an individual, carded an 82 on Tuesday to place him 71st (83-88-82--253 +40).
Temple claimed the team title after starting the day in sixth place and carded an Invitational low score of 296. Their two-day total of 900 was three strokes ahead of Rhode Island, who finished in second. Villanova and Georgetown tied for third place with a team total of 905. Delaware, Youngstown State, Drexel, Fordham, Bucknell, Army, St. Joseph's, La Salle and Villanova rounded out the 13 team field.
Delaware's Braden Shattuck, who began the day in first place, claimed the overall individual title with a three round score of 214 (68-72-74--+1). Skurla, Rhode Island's Branden Chicorka, Georgetown's Gregory Podufal and Drexel's Christopher Crawford rounded out the top five individual finishers.
Villanova will be back in action in just five short days when they participate in the Yale Spring Invitational on Saturday, April 6th in New Haven, Conn. Results will be posted on villanova.com as soon as they are made available.
