MALVERN, Pa. - Villanova junior Steve Skurla is alone in 2nd place with 18 holes to go at the Wildcat Invitational being played at the par-71, 7,055-yard White Manor Country Club in Malvern, Pa. The team is in a tie for fourth through two rounds after shooting a 313-297--610 (+42) on a cold and windy day that saw gusts up to 40 miles per hour. The cold conditions had a significant impact on the 14-team, 78-player field as the players had to battle through a tough 36 holes. One foursome was unable to finish due to darkness, but as it stands, the Wildcats are tied with Central Connecticut State and just 8 shots behind first place Ohio State.
Skurla shot a 77 (+6) in the first round, but came back strong with a 67 (-4) in the second round which is his personal low round this season to date. The junior had four birdies on the day and an eagle 2 on the short 335-yard, par-4 7th hole. Skurla trails Ohio State's Matthew Turner heading into the final 18 holes.
Senior Brian Colbert (78-75--153;+11) is in a tie for 13th after having 24 pars out of the 36 holes despite the difficult conditions. Next for the Wildcats was senior Bret McGaughey who is in a tie for 28th after carding a 79-77--156 (+14) after three birdies over the two rounds.
The Wildcats also have three individuals competing in the event. Sophomore Vince Boyle shot an 81 (+10) in the opening round and is 7-over through 14 holes, which he will finish in the morning before completing the final round. As it stands, the sophomore is in a tie for 42nd. Juniors Jimmy Johnston (82-79--161; +19) and Derek Jones (81-80--161; +19) are in a tie for 50th.
