MALVERN, Pa. - After the first day of the Wildcat Invitation held at White Manor Country Club, a par-71, 7,055 yard course in Malvern, Pa., Villanova is tied for second and 13th place overall in the 13 team field through two rounds of play with two teams in the mix for the all-around title. The two-day tournament will conclude tomorrow with one final round on Tuesday, April 2nd.
Villanova senior co-captain Steve Skurla (Wheaton, Ill.) leads all Wildcat finishers in third place overall after posting rounds of 73 and 71 for a two-round total of 144 (+2). Senior co-captain Michael Kania (Haverford, Pa.) (77-73; 150 +8) and sophomore Ted Brennan (Newtown Square, Pa.) (76-74; 150 +8) are both tied for ninth place while senior Derek Jones (Lower Burrell, Pa.) (80-76; 156 +14) and graduate student Cory Siegfried (Villanova, Pa.) (81-77; 158 +16) round out the top five for Villanova's first squad tied for 33rd and 43rd place in the individual standings, respectively.
Competing on Villanova's second group includes junior Vince Boyle (Philadelphia, Pa.) (78-79; 157 +15), who paces the team tied for 38th place. Junior Robby Meador (Miami Lakes, Fla.) (79-80; 159 +17), freshman Luke Waggoner (Crystal Lake, Ill.) (85-75; 160 +18), senior Jimmy Johnston (Wayne, Pa.) (77-83; 160 +18) and sophomore Scott Miller (Madison, N.J.) (87-84; 171 +29) round out the scorers tied for 47th, 52nd, 52nd and 71st place in the individual standings. Freshman Jessie Stephens (Akron, Ohio), competing as an individual, is also tied for 71st place after finishing with a two round total of 171 (83-88).
In the team standings, the University of Rhode Island took the top spot with a team total of 595 while Villanova and Delaware are tied for second place after posting 600's on the day and just five strokes back. Georgetown, Youngstown State, Temple, Drexel, Fordham, Army, Bucknell, La Salle, St. Joseph's and Villanova round out the 13 squads participating in the invitational.
Delaware's Braden Shattuck leads the field with a two-stroke buffer after finishing two-under par with rounds of 68 and 72 (140). Rhode Island's Branden Chicorka is in second place finishing even with rounds of 72 and 70 to pace the Rams while Skurla is in third place overall for the Wildcats and just four strokes back at 144 for the day.
The second annual Wildcat Invitational will conclude tomorrow as Villanova tries to improve in the individual and team standings. Results will be available on golfstat.com and villanova.com following the day's action.
