Wildcats Earn a First Day Split at Match Play

ORLANDO, Fla. - Villanova got off to a great start at the BIG EAST Match Play event being played at the par-72, 7,154-yard Reunion Resort's Watson Course in Orlando, Florida. Villanova defeated BIG EAST foe DePaul 3.5 to 2.5 in the opening round of the event. Following the victory, the Wildcats took on Notre Dame and fell in a good match 4 points to 2.

The victory over DePaul marked the first team match victory in three years at the event as the Wildcats started the spring swing on the right foot.

Each team put six golfers in the field and the Wildcats won three matches and halved another. The winners were No. 2 seed senior Brian Colbert (2&1), No. 4 seed senior Bret McGaughey (4&3), and No. 6 seed sophomore Vince Boyle (4&3). Their three full points were crucial to the day's success. No. 1 seed junior Michael Kaniahalved his match with DePaul's top golfer Ben Westley.

No. 3 seed junior Derek Jones (2&1) fell in a tight match while No. 5 seed Robby Meadordropped his decision 4&2.

In the afternoon match, McGaughey continued his winning ways by taking his match 1 Up, while Kania stayed undefeated for the event by winning 2&1, which gave the Wildcats their total of 2 points.  Colbert (3&2), Jones (4&3), Meador (4&3), and Boyle (5&4) fell in defeat in the afternoon matches.

After falling in the semifinals to Notre Dame, Villanova moves to the other side of the bracket and will take on Virginia Commonwealth in the morning match.
