Villanova Connection a Big Part of FCS Awards Banquet
Dec. 5, 2012
Fifteen years after Villanova University's Brian Finneran and Andy Talley captured two of the major individual awards in the FCS, they will return to the national banquet this month to present the Walter Payton and Eddie Robinson awards to the respective 2012 recipients.
The 26th annual FCS Awards Banquet and Presentation will be held on Monday, Dec. 17 at the Sheraton Society Hill Hotel.
Finneran is the only wide receiver to capture the Payton Award, given to the outstanding player in the FCS. In the 1997 season, he caught 96 passes for 1,389 yards and 19 touchdowns, and led Villanova to an undefeated regular season, the Atlantic 10 title and an NCAA playoff berth. He went on to play 12 years in the NFL.
Talley was the mentor of the '97 Villanova squad, and he captured the Robinson Award as the FCS national coach of the year. He recently completed his 29th season with the Wildcats, leading an 8-4 squad which earned a share of the CAA Football title and reached the national playoffs. He has a 198-120-1 record at Villanova, and is 226-138-2 in his career.
Finneran will present this year's Payton Award. The three finalists invited to the banquet are Wofford fullback Eric Breitenstein, Old Dominion quarterback Taylor Heinicke and Stony Brook running back Miguel Maysonet.
Talley will present the Robinson Award to this year's recipient.
In addition, Georgia Buchanan, widow of Buck Buchanan, will present the 18th Buck Buchanan Award to this year's outstanding defensive player in the FCS, and Jerry Rice will present the second Jerry Rice Award to the FCS freshman of the year. Villanova redshirt freshman quarterback John Robertson is a finalist for the Rice Award.
The gala event will begin at 6 p.m. with a cocktail reception and silent auction to benefit the Philadelphia Chapter of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. The dinner and awards presentation will follow at 7 p.m.
Tickets cost $100 each. For further information, contact Craig Haley of The Sports Network at 215-441-8444, ext. 1119, or email email@example.com.
