Four Wildcats Earn All-CAA Honors
Nov. 21, 2011
VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) today announced the 2011 football All-Conference teams. Four Wildcats were honored, including senior corner James Pitts (Montclair, N.J.) and junior center Dan Shirey (Feasterville, Pa.) who were first team selections. Junior punter Mark Hamilton (Gaithersburg, Md.) and freshman linebacker Dillon Lucas (Medford, N.J.) earned third team honors.
After garnering third team honors in 2009 and 2010, Pitts was rewarded for his play this season by being named to the first team. He finished the 2011 campaign with 60 tackles (43 solo), five interceptions, five pass break-ups and a fumble recovery. The five interceptions ranked second in the CAA. His best game of the season came at Massachusetts on Nov. 5, when he tallied three interceptions in a 35-17 victory.
Shirey earns All-Conference accolades for the second straight season. As a sophomore last year he was a third team selection. Shirey started all 11 games for the Wildcats this year and was the anchor for an inexperienced offensive line. He helped Villanova average 295.2 yards of total offense per game, including 138.4 rushing yards per contest.
In his first year as the team's punter, Hamilton is a third team All-CAA selection. He punted 55 times this past season for 2,352 yards for an average of 42.8 yards per punt. Of the 55 punts, 11 were of 50 yards or longer and 17 of the 55 were placed inside the opponent 20-yard line.
Lucas started all 11 games as a true freshman and led the Wildcats in tackles with 92, including 51 solo stops. He also added three tackles for loss and two quarterback sacks. His best game of the season came against Old Dominion on Oct. 22 when he tallied 12 total stops.
