Head Coach Andy Talley Becomes All-Time Leader for Conference Wins
Nov. 9, 2008
VILLANOVA, Pa. - It was a record-breaking day on the Main Line on Saturday, Nov. 8, as No. 6 Villanova tallied a 24-13 win over No. 8 New Hampshire. With the victory, Villanova head coach Andy Talley registered his 98th conference win, becoming the all-time winningest coach in the history of Colonial Athletic Association Football. Talley moved ahead of former New Hampshire mentor Bill Bowes who recorded 97 conference wins during his coaching career.
The league has been in existence in one form or another since 1947. It was the Yankee Conference from 1947-96, the Atlantic 10 Football Conference from 1997-2006 and is currently the CAA.
Currently in his 24th season as Villanova's head coach, Talley has registered a 162-100-1 mark during his Wildcat career. The 162 wins rate as the most in school history. His 28-year overall coaching record currently stands at 190-118-2.
Throughout his Villanova career, Talley has guided the Wildcats to six NCAA playoff appearances, four conference championships, two Lambert Meadowlands Cups, two ECAC Team of the Year Awards and one national semifinal appearance. Talley's best season came in 1997 when he led Villanova to the first-ever undefeated, untied full regular season in school history.
Talley wasn't the only Wildcat to enter the record books on Saturday. Senior place kicker Joe Marcoux connected on a 35-yard field goal late in the game, giving him 14 made field goals on the season. The 14 field goals establishes a new single season school record. After nine games this year, Marcoux is 14-of-18 in field goals attempts. He has also totaled a team-best 69 points this season.
Villanova will return to action on Saturday, Nov. 15, when the Wildcats host Towson at Villanova Stadium. Kickoff is set for 1 p.m.
