Villanova/Temple Post-Game Notes

Sept. 4, 2010

Villanova won last year's inaugural Mayor's Cup, 27-24, when Yako kicked a game-winning 32-yard field goal as time expired.

Szczur returned the opening kickoff in tonight's contest 43 yards and might have had a shot to run the ball all the way back for a score were it not for stepping out of bounds. The seven kickoff returns and 165 kickoff return yards were both single-game career highs for Szczur.

Tonight's loss snapped a nine-game winning streak for the Wildcats, who had not lost since their sixth game of the 2009 regular season. Villanova went on to capture its first-ever FCS national title with a 23-21 victory over Montana in Chattanooga, Tenn.

In tonight's game, the Wildcats held possession for 17:49 in the opening half, when they had nearly double the total offense of the Owls. Villanova owned a 208-112 edge in total yards in the first half.

In the second quarter alone, the Wildcats held the ball for 9:30 and had an edge of 83-40 in offensive yards. Temple responded to that by having the ball for more than 18 minutes in the second half. The Owls finished the night with a 322-311 edge in total offense.

Villanova did not punt the ball for the first time until the middle of the fourth quarter.
