RICHMOND, VA. -- The Colonial Athletic Association (CAA) today announced the recipients of the inaugural Team Academic Excellence awards for the 2016-17 campaign. In the sport of football, the Villanova Wildcats earned the award for having the highest grade point average (GPA) of all 12 CAA football programs.
The Team Academic Excellence Award recognizes the institution with the highest collective grade point average (GPA) in all 22 sports sponsored by the CAA. The team GPA is a calculation of the grade point average of each student-athlete who appeared on an institution’s roster throughout the final day of their respective championship seasons during the 2016-17 academic year.
Last March, the Wildcats had 42 players named to the CAA Academic All-Conference team. This was the second straight year that Villanova placed 40 or more student-athletes on this team.
In the most recent release of NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR) data last April, the Wildcats were one of just 12 Division I schools and seven who play FCS football to have both their football and men’s basketball teams garner public recognition for ranking among the top 10 percent of their sport nationwide.
Villanova opens the 2017 season on Sept. 2, with a game at Lehigh. Kickoff is set for 12:30 p.m. The home opener is set for Sept. 16 against Lafayette.
