Villanova Wildcat defensive end Rakim Cox (6-4, 270 lbs., San Diego, Calif.) has signed a free agent contract with the Minnesota Vikings.
A four-year starter, Cox was a top playmaker for the Villanova defense last season. In 11 games last year, Cox tallied 30 tackles, a team-high nine sacks, a team-best 11.5 tackles for loss, three blocked kicks and a forced fumble. He ranked tied for 12th in the nation in sacks per game. For his efforts last season, Cox earned first team All-CAA honors for the second straight year.
Cox finished his career having played in 48 games for the Wildcats. His career totals include 18 sacks and a total of 33.5 tackles for loss. Cox also registered 105 career tackles, broke up 16 passes and had four forced fumbles, two interceptions, one fumble recovery and four blocked kicks.
Villanova currently has five players under contract with NFL teams. In addition to Cox, the other four include safety Ray Ventrone (San Francisco 49ers/ 9th NFL season), fullback Darrel Young (Washington Redskins/ 5th NFL season), offensive lineman Ben Ijalana (New York Jets/ 4th NFL season) and safety Ross Ventrone (Pittsburgh Steelers/ 4th NFL season).
