VILLANOVA, Pa. - The Villanova Wildcats opened up the 2013 spring season this morning with a spirited two-hour rain soaked workout. Villanova practiced from 8-10 a.m. on the stadium turf. Today is the first of 15 practices that will run through April 18. A complete spring practice schedule is listed below.
"We are ready to get the spring season underway. The players have done a great job throughout the winter with both lifting and conditioning. It is important we carry over the effort from the off season workouts throughout spring ball," said Wildcat head coach Andy Talley. "We are coming off a terrific season and I want to see us continue to get better during spring drills so we are ready to accomplish even more next year."
Villanova returns 16 starters and 35 letterwinners from last year's team that went 8-4 overall and earned a share of the CAA championship with a 6-2 league record. The Wildcats earned their fourth NCAA playoff appearance in five seasons in 2012.
The Wildcats return eight All-Conference players in 2013. Of the eight, three earned first team All-CAA honors, including senior nose guard Antoine Lewis, junior running back Kevin Monangai and senior defensive end Rakim Cox.
Sophomore quarterback John Robertson will also be back under center. As a redshirt freshman last season, Robertson completed 152-of-253 for 1,965 yards to go with 14 touchdowns and seven interceptions. He also rushed 189 times for 1,021 yards (5.4 yards per carry) and 14 scores. For his efforts last year, Robertson earned the Jerry Rice Award which is given to the top rookie in FCS football. He also garnered CAA Offensive Rookie of the Year accolades and third team All-CAA honors.
Villanova will kickoff the 2013 season on Saturday, August 31, at Boston College. The home opener is set for Sept. 21 versus Stony Brook.
