VILLANOVA, Pa.--The football team opened up the 2014 spring season on Tuesday morning with a spirited two-hour workout. Villanova practiced from 8:15-10:30 a.m. on the Villanova Stadium turf. Today is the first of 15 practices that will run through April 12. A complete spring practice schedule can be found by clicking on the link at the top of this release.
"We are excited to get the spring season started. Hopefully, the weather will cooperate and we will have good practice conditions throughout the 15 workouts," said veteran head coach Andy Talley. "I have been very pleased with the effort we have seen from this group throughout the winter conditioning phase of the schedule. It is now time for us to see how we look on the football field. My goal is for us to have an outstanding spring season and take that momentum into training camp in August."
Villanova returns 15 starters and 33 letterwinners from last year's team that went 6-5 overall and 4-4 in CAA play.
Led by junior quarterback John Robertson, the Wildcats return five All-Conference players in 2014. Robertson, who was a second team All-CAA selection last year, led the team in 2013 in total yards with 3,362, including 1,957 yards passing and 1,405 yards rushing. Joining Robertson on the 2013 second team was linebacker Don Cherry who led Villanova in tackles with 99.
The Wildcats will kick off the 2014 season on Saturday, August 30, at the Carrier Dome against Syracuse.
