Villanova Makes Coaching Staff Changes
Jan. 26, 2000 Villanova University head football coach Andy Talley today announced two changes to the Wildcat coaching staff. Current linebacker coach Joe Trainer has been promoted to defensive coordinator, replacing former defensive coordinator/secondary coach Jim Fleming who resigned earlier this month to become head coach at Sacred Heart University in Fairfield, Conn. In addition, Talley has also hired Clayton Carlin as the team's defensive backs coach. Fleming leaves the Main Line after serving two seasons as the team's defensive coordinator. Besides taking over the coordinator duties, Trainer will continue to tutor the Villanova linebackers. Trainer will be entering his fourth season on the Wildcat coaching staff in 2000. A native of Philadelphia, Carlin returns home after spending the past three seasons as the wide receivers coach at New Mexico State University. Also, during the 1999 season, Carlin served as New Mexico State's special teams coordinator. Prior to his stint at New Mexico State, Carlin spent three seasons as a graduate assistant at the University of Nebraska, where he was part of two Husker National Championship teams in 1994 and 1995. Before Nebraska, Carlin was the secondary coach for two seasons at Delaware Valley College.
Carlin began his coaching career in the high school ranks at his alma mater, St. Joseph's Prep in Philadelphia. After one year as secondary coach in 1987 at St. Joseph's Prep, Carlin was elevated to the head coaching position for four seasons from 1988-91. Carlin is a 1987 graduate of Juniata College where he was a three-year starter at defensive back.
