Jan. 14, 2014
VILLANOVA, Pa. - Villanova University head football coach Andy Talley today announced the hiring of Joe Trainer as a Wildcat assistant. Trainer will coach the defensive line, in addition to being the team's special teams coordinator. He replaces Rocco Bellantoni who left last month to become an assistant coach at Florida Atlantic University.
Trainer is no stranger to the Villanova football program. He was an assistant on the Main Line from 1997-2004, including serving as the program's defensive coordinator from 2000-2004.
He arrives at Villanova from the University of Rhode Island where he was head coach for the past five seasons. After leaving Villanova in 2004, Trainer was the head coach at Millersville University from 2005-07, before leaving to be the defensive coordinator at Rhode Island in 2008. Following his one-year stint as a Ram assistant, he was elevated to the head coaching position in 2009.
Trainer has also held assistant coaching positions at Temple (1990-91), Frostburg State (1992), Colgate (1993-94) and New Haven (1995-96). He is a 1989 graduate of Dickinson College where he received a Bachelor of Arts degree in English. Trainer earned a Master's degree in Education from Temple in 1992 and a Master's degree in Counseling and Human Relations from Villanova in 2004.
