Villanova/Richmond Post-Game Quotes
Nov. 8, 2009
Villanova Head Coach Andy Talley...
Opening Statement: Well, I think the best thing I did this morning was take my heart medication. Pretty much this went the way I expected. I thought that if we shut their running game down we'd have a good chance to win the game. We were just trying to break their will, pretty much with a team like that if you don't break their will you'll get into a game like we just did. I have a lot of respect for Mike London. If we played at Villanova we would've had a little more of a shot, but down here all bets are off. They're very, very good.
On coming down a day early: I think it made a big difference that our Athletic Director let us do that. It's a five and a half-hour drive and that's a long way. Our players want to come here early. We've had a lot of flu a lot of illness and getting here early and letting them rest.
On the win: It's huge for the team. We came here and they're a great team and then to come out on top especially towards the end of the season is huge.
On Richmond's physicality: We are a pretty physical team, but they are as well. They have a lot of respect for us -- I know that. We got them last year at our place pretty good.
On Eric Ward and Chris Whitney: They are both the kind of QBs you need to win a championship.
Senior wide receiver Brandyn Harvey...
On left-handed catch: I was open. I should have caught it with two hands probably but one worked. I stuck the ball out because I just wanted to make sure I scored. I didn't do as much as I wanted to but I made a play at the end of the game.
Richmond Head Coach Mike London...
Opening statement: It was a great football game. Unfortunately, we were on the opposite end of it. We still had a chance to win it at the end which was amazing with everything that went on. Villanova is the best team we've played to date, and they are a very talented team. We have to address some issues, but we've got a good football team. We just have to take care of some things and bounce back and get ready for next week.
On Richmond's slow start to game: Both teams were trying to feel each other out. Both teams had 300-400 yards of total offense and their linebackers and defensive linemen were very strong with their blitzing. They tried to put a lot of pressure on Eric [Ward]. We just had to adjust to what they were doing. As the game went on, we managed the ball pretty well.
How the loss is good or bad for team morale: It always seems when you lose a game, particularly one you had an opportunity to win, it's a lesson learned as to how close games are and how one-play football like extra points are important. We're just going to go back and see what we need to do to get better before playing our next week's opponent. Anytime you lose you have to reflect on how you could've played better. They're a good team but we're a very good team also.
On decision to go for it on fourth-and-one at midfield: I was thinking play to win the game. That's the mentality that I have. When it's fourth-and one or two and less, I like our percentages.
On the streak ending: I don't know if any of these guys were talking about the streak. Each game was its own and how we did and how we executed was always the main point. Today, we got out-executed and we had a chance at the very end to win it, but we didn't. We have eight wins for this program, which is pretty good. Now, we're going to go out and try to get number nine.
On Eric Ward and Chris Whitney: They're both good quarterbacks. Chris can throw the ball, run the ball and they're two good players. But, I'll take my guy over anybody.
On the game-winning catch: It was a great catch. If he (Brandyn Harvey) misses it, then it's over. But he makes the play. It goes to show you how important it is to make the sack or break up the pass.
On possibly meeting Villanova again in the Playoffs: It'd be a tribute to the CAA to get a couple of teams in there playing each other. Right now, we're going to take care of the matter at hand and focus on who we play this week.
Junior linebacker Patrick Weldon...
On his interception: We were bringing a blitz and bringing pressure. I was able to go out of my coverage responsibility and picked up a block. I was just reading the eyes of the quarterback and was fortunate enough to be in the right place and make a good play and put our team in a position to get the football and put some points on the board.
Senior quarterback Eric Ward...
On Richmond's last drive: We were just trying to get down the field. If I could, try to get a pass and get us in the end zone but I really just wanted to get us downfield and put us in a position to get a kick. We just wanted to move the ball and not turn it over.
On winning streak ending: We lost to a good team today. It's a loss. The streak was good but we have another football game to play next week. We'll go back to the drawing board and see what we did wrong and correct it. Hopefully we'll put together another streak.
