Villanova, PA - A one yard quarterback sneak by Marvin Burroughs for a touchdown gave Villanova (3-5, 2-3 A-10) the 35-31 victory over William and Mary (2-6, 0-5 A-10). The Wildcats racked up 508 yards of offense, with Burroughs completing 15 of 19 for 248 yard and 2 TDs. The win was just the second in 12 meetings at William and Mary for the Wildcats.

William and Mary had taken the lead with a 27-yard field goal by Blair Pritchard with just over two minutes left. But the Wildcats were able to drive 67 yards in 1:34 without any timeouts for the game winning score.

Villanova running back DeQuese May opened the scoring for both teams with a 31-yard touchdown reception in the first quarter. The Tribe would answer with two touchdown runs of two yards from Elijah Brooks to take a 14-7 lead after the first quarter.

Mike Potts added another rushing touchdown for William and Mary to increase their lead to 21-7 with eight minutes left in the first half. But the Wildcats would respond with a 5 play, 64 yard drive that was capped with a 28-yard touchdown reception by Phil Atkinson, cutting the W&M lead to a touchdown. A Joe Marcoux 24-yard field goal with 28 seconds remaining before halftime cut the Villanova deficit to four.

The only scoring in the third quarter was a 27-yard Marcoux field goal to bring VU within on at 21-20. May put Villanova back in front with a 6-yard TD run to finish off a drive that started at Villanova's own 2-yard line and consumed five and a half minutes off the clock. Burroughs completed a pass to Matthew Sherry for the two-point conversion to give the `Cats a 28-21 lead with eight minutes left in the game.

 

 

William and Mary would not trail for long, scoring just 44 seconds later on a 57-yard strike from Mike Potts to Drew Atchison to knot the score at 28-28. Pritchard would follow with his field goal to set the stage for Burroughs dramatics.

The Wildcats racked up 224 yards rushing, led by Matt Dicken's 96 yards on 16 carries. Burroughs carried the ball 13 times for 53 yards and a score. May and Aaron Jones both finished with 46 yards on the ground.

May also led the Wildcats' attack through the air, hauling in three passes for 81 yards and touchdown. Atkinson also caught three passes for 59 yards and touchdown.

Leading the Villanova defense was Allyn Bacchus with 14 tackles, seven solo and seven assists.

Villanova returns home next Saturday to host Richmond starting at 6 P.M.
