Villanova/Massachusetts Post-Game Notes
Oct. 13, 2007
The three field goals in the game were a career-high for Marcoux and his 41-yard kick in overtime was one yard short of matching a career-high set last season at Hofstra.
Four players from each team had at least 10 tackles in the game. For Villanova, sophomore linebacker Osayi Osunde (Bloomsburg, Pa.) recorded 11 total tackles and blocked a 45-yard field goal attempt in the second quarter. Freshman Marquis Kirkland (Syracuse, N.Y.) had a sack for five yards and all three of his tackles led to losses totaling 16 yards.
Neither team scored on the first series of overtime as the sides traded interceptions. The Wildcats began with the ball and Whitney threw an interception. However, Lawrence fumbled and the ball was recovered by Villanova senior Derek Durkin (Canton, Mass.).
The Wildcats have racked up 476 rushing yards in their past two games after averaging just 101.6 yards per game through their first five outings. Villanova ran for 233 yards last Saturday in a 63-24 rout of William & Mary.
This was the second overtime game of the season for the Wildcats, who defeated Maine 24-17 in their home opener on September 15. Villanova previously had not played an overtime game since 2003. The four overtimes were the most since the team had a 41-35 win in six overtimes against Connecticut on October 7, 1989. The last time the Wildcats had more than one overtime game in a season came in 1999.
